#2 Miracle Ear - Energy BTE-R


Miracle Ear's first fully rechargeable (lithium-ion) hearing aid, the Energy BTE-R, is one of the brand's most popular to date. With a 12-hour battery life you can charge overnight and be ready for an entire day. Plus, no more fidgeting with small screws and buying replacement batteries. This allows you to have more time to do the things you enjoy.

The robust construction of the Miracle Ear Energy BTE-R means that you can get quite a few additional years of life out of this hearing aid. It also features a low-profile design that allows for discreet everyday use. You don't have to be embarrassed about your hearing aid showing while around family or in public. It is also water-resistant - which you'll appreciate the next time you get caught in the rain. The BTE-R is nearly invisible and reasonably reliable overall.

This model also has an automatic environmental management feature. This means that the device can detect sounds coming from different directions and adjust the clarity and volume on its own. So, if you are having a conversation with someone in front of you and then hear someone calling you from behind, you'll be able to hear both with near natural precision.

Pros

- Reliable customer service.

- Rechargeable with an average battery life.

- Built-to last.  High-grade, low weight materials.

- Adapts to different sources of sound with or without input from the user.

Cons

- Users have reported that it can be uncomfortable for some (especially those with small ear canals) due to its shape and small size.

- The small construction may be difficult to handle for those with dexterity problems. Further, it can be challenging to find if dropped.

- The money-back-guarantee can be a struggle if you aren't pleased with the product. Customers have frequently complained that the customer service reps made the process tedious and difficult.

- Cannot be purchased online. Must visit a physical location to purchase. Because individual franchise operators own Miracle Ear locations, prices and experiences may vary overall.

- Bluetooth connectivity to your iPhone or Android phone, allowing you to listen to calls and music.

#5 Otofonix Sona Fully Customizable Hearing Aid


Are you looking for a hearing aid that’s not only reliable, but has crystal clear sound quality and is incredibly affordable?  Enter the Otofonix Sona. The Sona offers many features found in expensive hearing aids - but at a fraction of the cost. And, unlike nearly all hearing aids, you can purchase the Sona online. Otofonix even has a walkthrough of the Sona app on their website - so if you aren't a computer expert, this model takes the guessing out of trial-and-error that plague many comparable apps.  The proprietary app is full of features for both iPhone and Android phones.  Additionally, the low-profile design makes it nearly invisible to wear.  And, you aren’t required to visit an audiologist for a hearing test and follow-up visits; making the Sona even more enticing.  Finally, out of all the hearing aids we tested, the Sona is one of the few that can be purchased online - you save money and time with this impressive model.

The Sona is versatile with 4 pre-configured programs (controlled via the Bluetooth smartphone app) and 10 volume levels that are designed to treat mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The directional microphone makes the Sona easily adaptable to any situation: from conversations in a crowded restaurant to playing one-on-one with your grandkids.

The comparatively low cost is the most attractive feature. Most hearing aids in the Sona’s class cost anywhere from $1500-$4500. You will pay a fraction of that price and receive many of the same advanced features and functionality. Further, their award-winning, US based, customer service is friendly and knowledgeable - there are very few issues that cannot be solved by these hearing aid experts.

Finally, the Otofonix Sona comes with a 45 risk-free trial. This makes the Sona an incredible buy. Try them, and if it isn’t everything you expected - return for a full refund. You truly have nothing to lose, and a whole new world of sound to gain when you purchase the Sona. The Otofonix customer service team (unlike other hearing aid companies out there) will guide you through the steps on how to make a return – no questions asked.

#6 The Wave - Audicus


Audicus’ self-touted “most advanced hearing aid” offers control and customization of your hearing experience with their dedicated mobile app. The Wave is a viable option for those with mild to severe hearing loss, but it’s $1700 price tag is a difficult financial barrier for those on a fixed retirement income. Rather new to the hearing aid market (2012), Audicus has introduced technology-driven hearing aids to assist end-users with a simple way to customize their hearing aid experience via Bluetooth and a smartphone app.

The Wave offers the ability to take and receive phone calls and listen to music via Bluetooth-Smartphone connection. You can also accept or reject calls on the unit by pressing a button. Transferring a call from your hearing aid back to your smartphone is just as easy.

The Wave does offer a Bluetooth TV Connector to listen to audio from your TV at a cost of $200, but there have been complaints of connectivity issues reported by users. Audicus also offers unlimited customer service and a couple other bells and whistles, but at a cost of $59 per month, per ear. This adds up to a whopping $730 per year - which puts the first year cost of owning the Wave at over $2400 alone. The 5 year cost of ownership weighs in at about $5350, which is something you’ll want to take into consideration. Overall, these add-on costs price-out this model to the user it desires to adopt.

The design is low-profile, making it nearly invisible when wearing. The construction is fairly robust and users seem satisfied. Small perks such as a premium case, cleaning brush designed especially for The Wave, and earwax guard dispenser tools and domes are appreciated bonuses.

While lacking the Telecoil function, the other features, such as the tinnitus manager, wind control and digital signature processing do roughly what they promise, but appear to need more years under its belt to refine and perfect to justify this price point. The dual microphones, standard in this class, are adequate and get the job done.

Pros

- App is compatible for iPhone and Android phones via Bluetooth

- Can take calls and listen to music via the listening aid

- Treats mild-to-severe hearing loss

- Includes a set of maintenance tools specifically for The Wave

Cons

- Expensive - prices range from $2200 - $4500

- The online hearing test is hit-or-miss

- Many of the features are paid-premiums and the costs add up quickly

Core Features

- Bluetooth phone calls and music streaming

- Rechargeable batteries

- Up to 1 week of battery life using the case with a single charge

#8 Core - MDHearingAid


The MDHearingAid CORE is the flagship model of the brand’s hearing aids currently offered for sale.  Offering noise reduction, dual directional microphones, and feedback cancellation along with a smartphone app, the CORE has some of the features those suffering from mild-to-moderate hearing loss are looking for.

Bluetooth connectivity to the smartphone app allows the user to adjust their settings on the fly, and users report that it is intuitive and easy to use. Not too many bells and whistles; however, enough to customize the experience just right for most.

The dual microphones auto adjust to changing environments, which is an appreciated feature. As with other hearing aids in this class, one microphone faces forward while the other faces behind the wearer. This allows the unit to pick up on sounds or conversations in front or behind them. The auto adjust feature heightens the experience. Sudden loud sounds are dampened and very soft sounds (such as birds chirping) are amplified. All without input from the user.

The profile, albeit the slimmest in the MDHearingAid line, isn’t quite as comfortable or non-descript as other units in its class. It is functional and could appeal to some. But, if you are looking for a lower profile hearing aid that’s built for comfort, this device may not be for you.

Unfortunately, the construction of the CORE is sub-par. Many reviewers from the BBB website (25 complaints in total for the brand) state that if repairs need to be performed, the product is nearly impossible to put together again due to the poor quality of construction and materials.

#9 Costco - Kirkland Signature 9.0


Costco’s flagship hearing aid is the Kirkland Signature 9.0.  From their robust features (20 fine-tuning channels, 9 automatic programs, 3 manual programs) to its discreet and near invisible profile - this is a competitive hearing aid for mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

To purchase, you’ll need a Costco membership and visit your local warehouse.  You’ll be given a hearing test that will last about an hour.  Then, you’ll receive custom fitting for maximum performance and comfort.

If you like flexibility in usability, the Kirkland Signature 9.0 hearing aids can be operated from the device or by using your iPhone or Android phone.  Further, the Bluetooth connectivity can pair to any device that offers Bluetooth connectivity.

Even with the on-board device controls and “fine-tuning” through the app, the Kirkland Signature 9.0 also can adapt on the fly by utilizing technology that can determine the size of the room/building you are in and can make automatic “smart” adjustments.

There are also small, yet welcomed accessories and resources.  The model includes 10 batteries, which is a significant savings.  Also, because of the many Costco locations, you have flexibility in receiving service.

Overall, the Costco Kirkland Signature 9.0 is versatile and user-friendly.  The technology can be used to adjust the hearing aids in many different ways: You can either allow the on-board chip to adjust automatically or you can have a more customized experience by “tweaking” the settings via your smartphone.

Pros

- Price for a pair is $1499 - this is a competitive price for a hearing aid with app functionality and other bells and whistles.

- Hands-free phone calls via Bluetooth connectivity for iPhones and Android phones.  Calls can be answered by pressing a button on the device or via answering a call physically on your phone (Easy Line Remote feature)

- Costco customer service is very helpful when you need to utilize the warranty.

- Directional microphones with binaural beam forming for better understanding of speech in noisy environments.

Cons

- Cannot be purchased online.

- Only sold as a pair - if you only need a hearing aid for one ear, this model is not for you.

- Need to invest time and possible follow-up visits for their free hearing test (necessary).  This hearing test takes about 1 hour.

- No user tone (bass, mid or treble) controls.

- One of the most common complaints is some aids crackle during use.  Although you can exchange a “: lemon” for a working model with relative ease, this can be a frustrating issue.

Core Features:

- 5 color options (Beige, Stone, Black, Silver, Bronze)

- Usability is simple and straight-forward; either from the device or from your smartphone

- 4 power receiver levels

Highlights

The Kirkland Signature 9.0 is the flagship model for Costco.
The app for the Kirkland Signature 9.0 is available for both Android and iPhone.
10 batteries are included with each pair of the Costco Kirkland Signature 9.0 hearing aids.  This is a great value.
